This little town is a great one for heading out and catching some good-sized fish. The waters off of Portland contain a treasure trove of marine life and are especially good for Snapper, Flathead, Trevally and Yellow Tail Kingfish. Stop in at ‘Portland Bait and Tackle’ to get your supplies and some local advice on what’s biting. If you are feeling a little more adventurous, head out into the deeper water with one of the charter companies and try for some Sharks or Southern Bluefin Tuna. Once you have caught your fill, head back to town and stay at one of the great Portland accommodation options, with both hotels and B&B’s being good options in this area.
If you enjoy spear fishing, or want to give it a try, Port Campbell offers some great opportunities to have a go. Mullett, Salmon and Bream are there for the taking in these waters and you are also a good chance at getting some Trevally, Barracouta and even the odd Garfish. When the day is done, you’ll appreciate the luxury and friendliness you’ll find at any of the Port Campbell accommodation options. Stop in here for a couple of days, you can’t go wrong!
This small town where trade in whale and seal meat once flourished is the fishing spot you’ve been dreaming of, with an absolute abundance of fish year round. The winter and spring seasons see huge amounts of Barracouta, Bream, Rock Cod, Parrot Fish and Sweep. The summer and autumn give up Mulloway, Perch, Trevally and Whiting. The hotels here are clean and inexpensive, so if you are returning late from your fishing, check into one and try your luck again in the morning.
This popular Great Ocean Road destination is worth the stop, especially if you are a fan of calamari. Fishing for squid off the jetty here is almost guaranteed to meet with success, and even if you have no luck with the squid, you are still a good chance of hooking a few leatherjackets. If you are going to stay the night here, the best bets are definitely the local B&B’s, all of whom are friendly and can offer local insight into what’s biting.
If you didn’t get a chance to go after the sharks off of Portland, be sure to have a go here. ‘Apollo Bay Fishing and Adventure Tours’ specialize in taking people offshore to do battle with Mako Sharks and Big Blue Sharks. Top quality gear is provided and is a great way to enjoy a day’s fishing in this spectacular part of Victoria. Tours go up to 20km offshore and last up to 6 hours. Hotels in town are a good deal for a comfortable stay.
