Adventures in the Fiji Islands
Whether you want to stay stay for a week or a month, or if you stop by for a day or two during a South Pacific cruise, you’ll be sure to find something interesting to do in the Fiji Islands. Even though they may seem small from Google Maps, the 300+ islands of Fiji are packed with a lot of activities that can easily fill at least a week, and more if you are into hiking and sailing.
Located in the Pacific Ocean, north of New Zealand and east of New Caledonia, the Fiji Islands are a tropical island group of 333 islands, most of them uninhabited. The Fijis might be the ideal of a tropical paradise, with beaches and beautiful ocean and coconuts and jungle. But the Fijis are also home to a unique culture which has remained well preserved, as well as home to all modern amenities for the Western traveler.
The first thing you might want to do is diving: diving in the Fijis is an amazing experience like no place else in the world. The islands themselves are based on and around coral reefs, and the pristine waters allow for a great diving experience. The islands are home to thousands of marine species which you can observe at your will as you are swimming through the Pacific Ocean. If you love to observe corals, then this is the perfect place, as the Fijis are the best place to find soft coral species. You can see the coral reef being built around you! If you like bigger fish, dolphins, turtles, sharks: Fiji has it all. Just bring your gear and get ready for some great diving.
If you like to stay dry, no matter: Fiji is big enough for you to enjoy its lush jungles, its hidden creeks and its volcanic geography. Put on your hiking boots and go on a hike to a volcanic summit where you can see the cold, solidified volcanic rock in the crater. The occasions for unique pictures will be all around you. And if you’re of the more urban type, the Fijis have been inhabited by South Sea Islanders, Indians, Chinese and Europeans and they have all melted together to produce a unique culture. So choose your menu, or just try whatever pleases you as you walk the stalls. Go to a luau or to a New York-style club.
As you can see, the Fijis have something for everyone. You might want to hop on one of the many Pacific cruises that pass through the Fijis on their way to the other island systems in this part of the Pacific. Whether you decide to just visit Fiji on its own, or along with other Pacific destinations, it won’t matter: it will steal your heart and you will want to go back for more adventures. We promise!
