Dayton, Ohio is fairly small considering it has such a rich history behind it. Dayton is possibly best known as a city that birthed several developments in the aviation industry. Aviation fans across the country come to Dayton to look at a couple of popular aviation landmarks.
Dayton National Aviation National History Park
Most people don’t know that Dayton was the hometown of Wilbur and Orville Wright. You can travel to the site what was once the Wright Brothers’ bicycle shop on Williams Street. That shop has since been turned into the Dayton Aviation Heritage National History Park.
The Dayton Aviation National History Park has three other locations throughout the city. One of the sites is the home of the Wright Brothers’ late childhood friend Paul Laurence, Dayton History at Carillon Park and the Huffman Prairie Flying Field and Interpretive Center. All centers offer a variety of exhibits and movies that help visitors learn more about the history of the aviation industry in Dayton.
Anybody who is interested in visiting any of the locations can contact the office at the site on Williams Street or call 937-225-7705.
National Museum of the United States Air Force
Anybody visiting Dayton, OH is encouraged to visit the National Museum of the United States Air Force. TripAdvisor ranks this destination as the most popular destination in the entire city.
This is the only museum in the country that delves into the history of the United States Air Force. More than a million people come to the museum every year. There is no fee to visit the National Museum of the United States Air Force.
The museum has many exhibits dating back to the early 1900s and models of famous aircrafts during every war and industrial period of the last century.
Every reviewer on TripAdvisor has rated their experience visiting the museum as either an excellent or very good. However, there are a couple of things you may want to keep in mind. Some people have said that the lighting isn’t the best for low quality cameras or older cell phones. You may want to consider bringing a more sophisticated camera if you intend to preserve the memories.
My brother and I visited the museum last year. We spent several hours there and still weren’t able to see everything that it had to offer. You will also need to be prepared to spend a lot of time walking between exhibits, so you may want to pick out a good pair of walking shoes.
Enjoy the History of Aviation at Dayton
Many people think about the historic flight at Kitty Hawk when they think about the Wright Brothers or the birth of our aerospace industry. However, you can get a fuller appreciation of the history of aviation in the United States if you visit Dayton, OH. I strongly encourage anyone who is visiting the city to check out the two centers that I have listed above. I am sure you won’t be disappointed.
