Prague

Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. Its official name is Hlavní město Praha, meaning Prague, the Capital City. Situated on the River Vltava in central Bohemia, Prague has been the political, cultural, and economic centre of the Czech state for over 1100 years. The city proper is home to more than 1.2 million people, while its metropolitan area is estimated to have a population of over 1.9 million. Prague is widely considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe with preserved examples from all periods of its history and is among the most visited cities on the continent.

The beautiful city of Prague and proud historic capital of the Czech Republic is situated along the Vltava River. It has managed to retain much of its traditional appearance, whilst also developing into a trendy destination on the modern traveler’s map.

Whether it’s for a romantic getaway for two or an informative sightseeing tour, this ancient well-preserved city has a multitude of attractions and a range of Prague hostels on offer.

Around Stare Mesto

Beyond the city’s commercial district lies the resplendent Old Town, or Stare Mesto - a sprawling collection of winding alleyways, wide historic squares and ancient architecture.

It is worth approaching Stare Mesto from the opposite side of the River Vltava and walking over the beautiful 14th century Charles Bridge to fully appreciate this area in all its brilliance. The stone bridge is filled with artists and street musicians entertaining visitors.

The Charles Bridge also connects the Stare Mesto to the city’s famous Castle, which has stood watch over Prague since the 12th century. The buildings at the site today, including the grand Saint Vitus Cathedral, have undergone some modifications throughout the ages, but remain among the city’s top attractions.

Nightlife

The Stare Mesto itself is home to a string of interesting buildings, including the Church of our Lady in front of Tyn which dominates Old Town Square.

In the evening, however, trendy residents descend on this square and its surrounding venues to embrace the city’s buzzing nightlife. Prague maintains a good balance between busy clubs and quieter, more traditional nightspots to suit most tastes and budgets.

There are also more venues spread across the city, so wherever travelers are staying on the Prague hostels map, there will always be somewhere close by where they can enjoy some good food, drink and music.

Before settling down and becoming a copywriter for HostelBookers. Paul Scottyn did a backpacking tour of Czech Republic, he checked out a variety of the country’s budget and group accommodation, including a number of most Prague hostels.
