“Variety is the spice of life!” Chances are pretty good that you’ve heard that expression at least a few times in your life and have felt the truth of it when we realize that our lives have become monotonous and routine. Every now and then, we all catch ourselves simply going through the motions of life: Waking up, going to work, coming home, watching TV, going to bed, then repeating the same process day in and day out. If that has ever happened to you, you will likely agree that it isn’t much fun. When every day feels the same, we all need something to help ourselves snap out of it and revive our appreciation for life, our sense of wonder, and the imagination of the child within us.
The secret to spicing up your life is hidden in plain sight within the quote: adding variety! Taking a new way to work, going to a different restaurant than usual, waking up at 5:00 am to see the sunrise. Even the smallest change in your daily routine will stand out like a drop of red ink on a crisp, white paper, and it will inspire you to make more changes in your life until you’re excited to make every day a new adventure. There is a lot of power in trying new things, and there are even forms of therapy, like experiential therapy, that are centered around branching out, breaking routines, and trying new things.
If you’ve noticed that your life could use some variety, or if you’re looking for a few more ways to add to the spices that you’ve already added to your life, here’s a list of recreational activitiess you can do to make your daily life more thrilling.
Find a New Way to Exercise
If you’re a fitness buff with a clear-cut exercise routine, consider shaking it up. If you don’t exercise regularly, consider starting — there is plenty of research suggesting that working out increases endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, and other chemicals that make you happy, give you more energy, and improve brain function. Here are a few exciting ways to get in a good workout:
- Rock climbing
- Water polo
The options are almost limitless! Try a few different sports and other recreational activities, and stick to one that makes you happy and gives you a good workout.
Take a Class
If you’ve never looked into the classes near you, you’ll be surprised by the range of interesting skills, hobbies, and talents you can learn! From cooking to dancing, auto mechanics to coding, there’s likely a wide range of classes that you can take to keep you entertained and add some variety to your life.
You can even consider enrolling in a class or two at your local community college. They are more expensive, but they have enough options for everybody to find something they love. And the class will be full of people who share your same interests, so it’s the perfect time to make new friends!
Try a New Recipe or Restaurant
This is a perfect way to add spice to your life — literally. Going to a restaurant or trying a new recipe that you usually wouldn’t try is a simple, inexpensive way to shake things up just enough for them to be exciting. Maybe you just order something else at your favorite restaurant, or maybe you go somewhere entirely new and try some cultural foods you’ve never tried before. In any case, you’ll break your routine just enough to keep yourself on your toes and you just might find a food you love!
Try Your Hand at Art
Art is a great way to have fun, destress, and express yourself. A great thing about art is that there are so many different forms of it. Poetry, music, painting, drawing, sculpting, dancing, baking, quilting, the list goes on. Some forms of art can be done with common household items (drawing, for example, requires nothing but a pencil, paper, and a little bit of patience). Others will require a few investments — paint, a sewing machine, maybe a studio microphone and other recording equipment or instruments, and more. In the end, these investments can be well worth what you spend on them, as you will be adding some variety to your life and developing new talents that you enjoy!
