Seven Satisfying Burgers in New York
New York, there’s plenty of them around, but those that are on the well beaten tourist routes are pretty ordinary really. Then there are the big chains, and we all know what the big chain burgers taste like. It doesn’t really matter what town you’re in, a Big Mac is still a Big Mac after all.

Now it’s not hard to find a burger joint in New York, there’s plenty of them around, but those that are on the well beaten tourist routes are pretty ordinary really. Then there are the big chains, and we all know what the big chain burgers taste like. It doesn’t really matter what town you’re in, a Big Mac is still a Big Mac after all.
So to find the real thing, the taste of a good New York burger as voted for by the locals, here’s a rundown of places to look.
The Burger Joint at Le Meridien 119 west 56th street
Hidden away in the hotel lobby, the burgers here are plump and juicy and served quickly. There are two choices, simply burger, or cheeseburger and you’ll find yourself with change from $10 either way. Locals and regulars will tell you this is the best in town.
The Prime Burger 5 East 51 Street between Madison and 5th Ave
If you like your beef rare this is the place for you, here the quality of the burger meat is so good that the chefs are happy to serve it blue. Looks wise this place is old school America with Formica counters and booths for privacy. The crispy onion rings are pretty good here as well.
Paul’s Da Burger Joint 131 Second Ave between St Marks place and E. 7th
Here they believe that the right combination of ground beef and seasoning really makes the burger, and with premium quality raw ingredients this place certainly has it right. There’s an edge to what you can go for here too, the El Paso with cheddar and jalapenos is a great burger with a bit of real bite to it.
The Back Forty 190 Ave B at 12th Street
Ahhhh a burger with a bit of elegance. This place started as a humble burger joint and has now gone somewhat more upmarket, but there’s still a casual vibe to it, and their grass fed burger with spicy home made ketchup and pickle is still one of the staples on their brunch menu.
Donovan’s Pub Restaurant 57-24 Roosevelt Ave
You’ve gotta go a bit further for this one as this Irish tavern is in Queens. But when you get there you won’t be disappointed as these burgers are definitely on the generous side. Everyone’s a local here when they sit down to enjoy a char-grilled half pounder with home cooked steak fries and a pint of the best.
Shake Shack (Assorted Locations)
Shake Shack is almost a big chain but not quite. The first one is at the south western corner of Madison Square Park, and there are others in the Theatre district and beyond now. You may walk in wondering what it’s all about, but when you walk out full of a Shack Burger with side of fries and a Shackmeister Ale you’ll know all about it.
DuMont Burger 314 Bedford Ave
DuMont in Brooklyn offers a really classic burger and many think this is not just one of the best in Brooklyn but in the whole of New York. A classic DuMont burger includes melted brioche cheese, lettuce, tomato and home made pickles as well as a good sized burger of course.
