Six of the Best U.S. Cities for Summer Vacationing
Summer is a great time to take that great American road trip. Hop in the car, grab the kids or the dog, and make your way to some of the best U.S. vacation destinations around.
It may be the Windy City, but in summer, the winds are mild. Chicago is known for its neighborhoods, and summer is the perfect time of year to stroll past the coffee shops and restaurants of Lincoln Square or savor the energy of Wrigleyville. Take a riverboat architecture tour to learn more about Chicago’s history, then find your way to Navy Pier, where fireworks and a Ferris wheel (set to debut in 2016) sparkle in the dark.
The “City of Roses” is awash in flowers in summer, and June’s Portland Rose Festival is a celebration of their glory. Other Portland botanical attractions include the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden and Forest Park, the nation’s largest urban park. In August, catch the PDX Soapbox Derby, in which soapbox cars race for victory.
A college town just outside of Denver, Boulder is the perfect summer getaway. The biggest attraction in Colorado is the great outdoors, and Boulder has hiking and biking aplenty. Yet it also boasts a lively food scene. Hike Flagstaff Mountain, then grab a beer at Walnut Brewery.
If you want a taste of the classic New England summer, try Portland, Maine- the other Portland. Only 100 miles north of Boston, Portland offers a slower pace. Tour the Old Port, home to antique stores and galleries, then board the Maine Brew Bus for a tour of local breweries, distilleries, and wineries.
Perched on the edge of Lake Champlain, the small city of Burlington knows how to do summer. Grab a scoop of Ben & Jerry’s (Burlington was home to the original ice cream shop!) and wander through the Church Street Marketplace. Or eat your cone in peace by the lake.
Myrtle Beach, SC
Myrtle Beach is a popular Spring Break destination, but the city has a lot to offer for summer vacationers. Stroll down the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and scope out the clouds from the glass gondolas of the Skywheel. Or enjoy nature with hiking and biking in Myrtle Beach State Park. For a relaxing and fun place to stay, consider Sands Resorts, which offers ocean views and a variety of accommodations.
These are just a few ideas to get you started on planning a fun, summer vacation. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway or fun place for the family, you can’t go wrong with these options.
