The world’s your oyster regarding campervan holidays in the superbly campervan holiday-friendly season of spring. This landlocked European country has traditionally been a popular destination amongst hikers and mountaineers and nowadays it’s also popular with campers whether they’re pitching a tent or rolling up in a luxurious cabin on wheels.
Driving: Austrian roads are excellent, particularly the motorways which are efficient and very safe. Whilst the back roads are far more scenic than the motorways, and you spend time on these roads to get to the top camping spots, they’re characterised by hairpin turns. Also note that some back roads can be closed as late as May or June after the winter.
Campervan tips: Austria is campervan friendly and you’ll find a wealth of campsites throughout the country, even on the outskirts of the capital Vienna and major cities like Salzburg. When camping in RV rentals in the mountains, bear in mind that many campsites haven’t been levelled so you should bring chocks just in case.
Top camping destinations: Austria boasts many excellent camping destinations including:
- Hohe Tauern National Park and Krimmler Waterfalls
- The Wachau region (between Melk and Krems) of the Danube Valley
- Dachstein and Werfen ice caves
Like its southerly neighbour, the United States, Canada is a world class campervan destination and you’ll find that there’s more than enough to keep you enthralled on a campervan holiday around this immense country. To give you an idea of how much you have to look forward to, ‘Go RVing Canada’ recently held a contest called the ‘Top 100 Spots to RV in Canada’.
Driving: Canadian roads are excellent and the local drivers friendly and polite, though you will have to take into account the length of the winter when travelling in spring because some smaller roads might still be closed due to snow and ice.
Campervan tips: If you’re travelling in spring take into account that there might still be quite a few signs of winter remaining so pack warm sleeping bags and plenty of warm clothing. In general, you’ll find Canada to be one of the best destinations to enjoy a campervan holiday.
