The most challenging of all Ladakh treks is the one through the Zanskar mountain range. Since the region sees winters for 9 months of the year it is advisable to plan the excursion well in advance. Because of its inaccessibility, the Zanskar is also called the Lost Valley. The starting point of this particular trek is from Padum. Acclimatization is necessary otherwise you can face serious health issues in the course of your trek.
The best time to visit Ladakh is June-September. Also, it is in the summers that most of the Gompas or Buddhist monasteries of the region hold their annual festivals. From October onwards the temperature drops down to sub-Arctic levels and the snow blocks all passes.
Within the Kumaon region, the Nanda Devi trek is ranked highest for its difficulty level. It is a trek to the highest peak in India, the Nanda Devi on the Indo-Tibetan border. The trek begins from the small town of Munsiyari and cuts across the beautiful Johar Valley. It is a relatively unexplored region so the expedition feels especially rewarding.

In the matter of distance, the Garhwal Mountains are the closest to Delhi. There are a number of trekking options available in this region. First among them is the excursion to Roopkund Lake. Located at a height of 5029 m, it lies on the periphery of the Nanda Devi sanctuary. The starting point of this sparticular expedition lies in the Mundoli village located in the east Garhwal mountains. May-June and September to mid-October is the best time to trek on this route.
One of the most rewarding treks in the Garhwal region is an outing to the Bhyundar valley or the Valley of Flowers as it is more popularly known. Tight government regulations and environment control make sure that the valley retains its pristine state. The Valley is accessible from a small village called Gangharia. Getting to this village is an adventure in itself, one which begins from Ranikhet in the state of Uttaranchal. The best time to embark upon this trek is May-June and September to mid-October. Though, for the enthusiast, the first season is the best to view the valley carpeted by flowers. Find more India Travel Guide.
