Woodland Park Zoo
Woodland Park Zoo is a zoological garden in the Green Lake neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Occupying the western half of Woodland Park, the zoo began as a small menagerie on the estate of Guy C. Phinney, a Canadian-born lumber mill owner and real estate developer.
There’s a Zoo in Seattle? Time to Visit Woodland Park Zoo
By Ella S.
For anyone that’s ever visited Seattle or one of the surrounding communities, one of the first things to notice is that there isn’t a whole lot of extra room.

There buildings packed right next to each other, tourists walking over each other at all the tourist attractions, and as final evidence, the freeway system has no where to expand, which is causing headaches for the tourists and locals alike.
So with all of this, imagine the surprise that most people have who’ve never been to Seattle when they realize that there is actually a zoo right in Seattle’s backyard: The Woodland Park Zoo.
First of all, zoo’s are a great place to visit as a family. Kids get a kick out of running from one animal exhibit to another, and it seems that we as adults can never get enough of staring at all those different animals, while at the same time watching our children light up with every movement of the elephants or sound of the monkeys.
In this regard, Woodland Park Zoo does not disappoint. There are a ton of great animal exhibits and even though it’s not a huge zoo, there is plenty for everyone to see. If you’re not careful, you’ll end up carrying your kids to the car at the end of the day because they’ll be so tired from walking (and running) everywhere.
Not only does Woodland Park Zoo have your normal tiger, giraffe, gorilla exhibits, but there are some exhibits with animals local to the region. There is a fabulous butterfly exhibit but it is only open from May to September so you’ll want to plan your visit accordingly.
One other thing I like about Woodland Park is that there are some big open areas where you can bring your food and have a picnic-style lunch with your family. Unlike other places, this zoo doesn’t force you to buy ridiculously overprice food. Instead, you can sit and relax while you eat and maybe even take a nap if the weather is nice enough!
All in all, the Woodland Park Zoo is a definite destination for families with children. While the zoo might not be the biggest around, it does provide a whole day of entertainment that won’t soon be forgotten.
